The fire is prepared from plain wood; when it dies down to embers, all the boys jump through the fire as a ritual for good health and a blessing. The fire is to ward off bad spirits and many men make themselves up in the style of 'mummers' for the same purpose. The audience sing and dance during the evening ritual.

Also, on this day, the younger generation visit their parents with a gift of an apple or orange, kiss their parent's hand and ask for forgiveness if they have mistaken something during the year; others simply perform it just as a ritual.
